Whether you use a reusable waterbottle, carpool to work or hike trails at one of Arizona’s beautiful parks, there are so many ways to implement green living into your everyday life. And with Earth Month in full swing, now is the time to start thinking about how you can step up your game to celebrate and protect our planet.
Avance takes the LEED® in sustainable living.
There’s no better place to start living sustainably than at home. According to Rick Fedrizzi, CEO and founding chair of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), “The residential sector is responsible for 21 percent of U.S. carbon dioxide emissions, making it a real contributor to climate change.”
That’s why at Avance, we’re building sustainable living into the foundation of our communities—with homes that are LEED-certified. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and it’s a rating system administered by the USGBC to promote the design and construction of high-performance green homes.
LEED certification implements strategies for better environmental and health performance, and offers communities a holistic approach to sustainability. As Mr. Fedrizzi puts it, “LEED-certified homes like Avance are a measurable and impactful way individuals can make a difference for the environment.” The importance of these homes is that they show communities how everyone can see the benefits of “doing good by living well.”
Tips for turning Earth Month into action
Looking for ways to make an impact? Take your lead from LEED-certified Avance. Maracay’s LivingSmart® features include water-efficient fixtures, LED lighting, energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, Energy Star® appliances, tankless water heaters, and Wi-Fi-enabled, programmable thermostats.
Here’s what you can do:
- Turn off the water while you brush your teeth and install water-saving shower heads. Just skipping the bath can save about a third of the 80-100 gallons the average person uses every day.
- Use a water-sensing irrigation system and timers to ensure you’re conserving water and not overwatering your front yard and backyard landscaping.
- Install a smart thermostat to help your HVAC system run efficiently so you’re not heating or cooling unnecessarily.
Speaking of smart: Green living at Avance can save energy and increase home values
According to USGBC, LEED-certified homes are designed to use about 30-50% less energy than typical homes, adding up to thousands of dollars in savings over the seven or eight years that a family typically lives in a home. LEED-certified homes are rare and communities with all LEED-certified homes are even harder to find. In 2014, fewer than 1% of homes met LEED standards. What’s more, where two homes might have the same energy-efficient features, a home with LEED certification will have greater value, due to the high demand.
Celebrate Earth Day with Avance
In addition to saving energy, water and money, all Avance homes are designed to meet the EPA’s Indoor airPLUS specifications for a healthier and more comfortable indoor environment. And each home will be registered with the USGBC’s rating system that verifies compliance.
That’s how Avance is going big on energy saving for Earth Month and all year long. We wish you happy celebrations and hope to see you at our Grand Opening on Saturday, May 11 from noon to 4 p.m.
